Kids, especially firstborns, are always pampered at home by their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. However, extreme pampering is not also good for kids since they would grow up into indecisive adults later on. So the best way to pamper your kids is not to overdo it. This means that you can pamper them but not excessively.
Treat Kids Objectively
Treating kids objectively means that what is right will always be right, and what is wrong shall be treated as a wrong.
Due to the cuteness of kids, sometimes parents get carried away and tend to forget that the right discipline at a young age is very important. This does not mean that you have to use "The Rod" in order to get your kid to listen, rather let him know that you are angry with his wrong acts, instead of being complacent about it, or justifying it. You must shower your kid with love and affection, yet you must also accord him the proper discipline. Praise whenever he does something good or acceptable, but don't hesitate to call his attention whenever he does something that needs to be reprimanded. Just bear in mind not to scold your kid in public, as this might lower his self-esteem in the process.
Learn to Say No
Parents, as much as possible, don't want to disappoint their children and if they can give their kid everything he wants, so much the better. However, giving everything that your kid wants is not a healthy practice. You should, at the very least, learn to say no.
Saying "no" to your kid can sometimes be difficult, especially if you see his face crushed the moment you do. But you must overcome that strong urge to say "yes" if you want your kids to understand the meaning of being thrifty, and to assimilate the fact that not everything that they want in this world can be theirs.
So before buying that latest action figure which costs a lot, you can always try to negotiate with your kid to buy the one which is a bit cheaper, or you can tell him maybe next time as you still need to prioritize his needs. Of course, you can buy him an ice cream afterwards to make him feel better.
Pampering your kid is not something of an abomination, but rather it must be controlled and done in moderation. At a young age, kids must learn that they cannot simply have everything that they want. You shower your kid with love and even gifts, but you must also learn to discipline and to say "no" when you need to.
